Certification bodies are beginning to perform virtual audits! The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) has issued the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for Auditing and Assessment purposes which includes virtual auditing for third party certification. This is a great development for our industry and an opportunity to maintain and meet company goals, amidst these difficult times.

Remote audits refer to using technology to gather information, interview an auditee when “face-to-face” methods are not possible or desired. Virtual Audits are systematic, independent, and documented for obtaining objective audit evidence to compare the audit criteria exclusively using electronic technology, e. g. cameras, software, hardware, internet and communications technology (phones, headsets).

ISO 19011:2018, “Guidelines for auditing management systems”, describes how virtual audits can be conducted.
