ISO 19011 - Guidelines for auditing management systems

Introduction

The ISO 19011 standard defines guidelines for management system auditing.

The most recent version by International Organization for Standardization is ISO 19011:2018.

A second edition appeared in 2011. Since then, many new management system standards have been produced with similar structures, common terms, and definitions. As a result, a broader approach to management system auditing and more generic recommendations were required. Analyzing audit data can identify improvement opportunities and provide input to the analysis component of business planning.

ISO 19011 concentrates on internal audits (first-party) and external audits (second party) conducted by an organization on external providers and other interested parties. This is also useful for an external audit conducted other than third-party management system certification.

ISO 19011 Objectives:

An audit can be conducted against a variety of audit criteria, either individually or in combination, such as:

  • Requirements outlined in one or more management system standards
  • Policies and specifications provided by relevant interested parties
  • Statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Plans for the outputs of a management system
